About block printing

"When it comes to printing our fabrics, there isn’t a machine in sight!"

Fabrics to dye for

Our fabrics are printed by hand in England using traditional wooden blocks to transfer our non-toxic, water-based paints. Our fabric paints are blended in-house to create the gorgeous, rich pastel hues we love. Because our fabric is all printed by hand this gives us flexibility to work on bespoke commissions, so if you see a design you like on our site that isn't available in your colour scheme, please get in touch and discuss your requirements.

Drawing a blank

Our designs are all unique, and are first sketched and trialled in linseed oil lino, before being perfected and carved into hardwood blocks by artisan woodworkers in Jaipur, India. Jaipur is the block-printing capital of the world, and it's here that printers have passed their skills and knowledge from generation to generation for centuries. The whole process, from our initial sketches to being able to print our first run of fabric can take up to six months; it's a real labour of love!

Perfect imperfection

Block-printing allows for intricacies of tone and form to be transferred to the  fabric and for the printer's signature touch to make each meter of fabric unique; qualities you'd never find in uniform machine printed fabrics. All our fabrics are gently heat-treated to set the paint and ensure fabrics can be safely washed (although please refer to the individual care instructions for each of our products to ensure they remain in tip top condition).
